Photochemistry Expertise

A wide range of materials including inks, adhesives and coating are used for UV curing applications. The study of how these materials interact with light is a complex process in which Lumen Dynamics scientists and engineers have been studying for many years. These materials cure when exposed to high intensity UV light that triggers a polymerization reaction by activating a photo-initiator chemical that has been incorporated into the material.

There are many types of photo-initiators and the properties of the material to be cured often dictates which is required for the application. For some applications, the commercially available photo-initiators have been tuned to respond to the broader mercury spectrum. However, with the emergence of LED sources there has been significant effort focused on formulating UV curable materials that utilize the narrow spectrum of an LED source.

To optimize the cure efficiency of various materials a correlation between light source parameters such as irradiance, wavelength, dose and beam profile and cure parameters such as adhesion/depth of cure, surface cure, bulk cure and bond strength must be derived.
